Player Profile:-
I started playing cornet at the age of 7(ish) and joined the Scissett youth band near Huddersfield. My dads work forced us to move to Congleton where I joined Berisfords youth band where I progressed through the ranks up to principal cornet.
In 1986 I was asked to join the senior on 2nd baritone under the direction of Granville Jennings, where I sat next to th' owd man before eventually taking over the solo baritone seat. Whilst with the band I was fortunate enough to qualify for the national finals under the direction of Ralph Hall.
In 1993 I moved across to have a parp on BBb bass and in 1994 was asked to join the Greenway Selectus under the direction of Marc Owen. A change at the helm later that year saw me move bands and joined the British Aerospace (Chadderton) band where Simon Wood was musical director. A successful period saw the band pick up 2nd place in the 1st section national regionals in 1995, qualifying for the national finals at Wembley. In 1996 the band won the 1st section qualifying for the national finals in Cardiff, and winning the Northern Open Championships held in St Helens. In 1999 the band collapsed and I moved to the Ashton Under-Lyne band under Martyn Evans. Again success was achieved when the band won the regionals in the 1st section and also the subsequent national finals in Nottingham. In October 2000 I was asked to join the Leyland band where I was fortunate enough to win the regional championships on 2 occasions and qualify for the national finals each year between 2001 and 2008. In 2005 the band qualified for the European championships after winning the national finals at the Royal Albert Hall. Other achievements with the band include winning the All England Masters and the Grand Shield as well as picking up prizes in the Brass in Concert Championships. I stayed with Leyland until I was forced to take a sabbatical break from banding in May 2008.
