Emma Smith
Joined Silk Brass November 2001
Previous Bands:-
(Chapel School Band 1989 -1994)
Chapel-en-le Frith Town Band 1991-2001
Player Profile:-
Emma started playing trumpet age 9 and was initially taught by Nicky Longden (Flugel Horn at Leyland). Under the tutorage of Nicky, she achieved the Associated Board Grades 2 to 5 (Grade 6 being achieved on cornet)
At age 11 she joined the school band at Chapel-en-le-Frith High School (conducted by Sheila Walton!!) During this period Emma participated in various band tours - France 1991, Italy 1994 and Germany 1997.
In 1991 she made the move to cornet and joined the Chapel-en-le-Frith Town Band. During her 10 years at Chapel she worked with various MD's, namely Gordon Booth, Geoff Bradley, Peter Christian (currently MD at Bollington Band and Alan Wycherley, Soprano at Fodens.
Whilst at Chapel she saw the band progress from 4th to 2nd section, and played in over 40 contests, 5 National Finals including the finals at the Albert hall in 2000.
Emma joined Silk Brass in November 2001, and again made a return to Europe playing in Austria on band tour 2002, 7months pregnant!! (dedication!). Unfortunately she missed playing at national finals in Torquay due to the production of baby number one, four days before!! (She suggests this is a lame excuse, but we can let her off..... She did, after all, complete the tour of Austria without the need for hot water and clean towels!!)
Emma continued to play at all other contests/ concerts including 1st CD recording up until Aug 2004 when maternal instincts took over again and the birth of her 2nd baby. But, as the dedicated player that she is, she rejoined in May 2005 after a well deserved period of maternity leave.
Personal comments:-
"P.S. the band played at my wedding in Jan 2005 (just in case you want to know!!)"
