Player Profile:-
Ben started playing and taking lessons on the cornet when he was 6 and joined Whaley Bridge Youth when he was 8. Being a budding soloist, Ben competed in Slow Melodies in the High Peak area and in competitions all over the North West. As his confidence grew and the prizes started flowing in, he also competed in the National Slow Melody Championships. In his early days he was fortunate to cross the path of Mark Wilkinson (Principal Cornet Fodens) who tutored him throughout his high school years. By the time he was 15, he had achieved the final grade 8 practical examination. During high school Ben took a break from Brass Banding and was offered a dominant position in a jazz orchestra as lead trumpet. With Ben as lead Trumpet they were a very successful jazz band and won outstanding performance awards in the National Music for Youth competitions which lead to the band playing at the Birmingham Conservatoire and the Royal Albert Hall. The fact that he took a break from the Brass Band scene didn't stop the interest by other parties as to his potential. During this period he was asked to help out at BT Brass Band and performed in numerous concerts, the most prestigious being at BT's annual Christmas concert in London at the Royal Albert Hall. Ben (thankfully to the benefit of Silk Brass) then decided to return to Brass Banding after he had completed his A Levels. At the moment, he is currently at Manchester university studying for a degree in Accountancy and Finance.
Personal comments:-
"My other hobbies include a lot of socialising as us students do!
I enjoy skiing both on the snow and water and I am a keen wake boarder. I am also a football referee and work in a bank part time for my beer tokens!"
