Conductor Profile:-
Jim's playing career started at the age of twelve, when he joined the Glossop Old Junior Band with his two brothers, Hugh and Ken. Within a few years, they had all progressed to the senior band and enjoyed much success and sound musical grounding under the baton of Barry Hinde, Fairey's second euphonium player.
In 1978, Jim made the move into the Championship Section by joining CWS Manchester band, under the direction of Trevor Walmsley and later, Frank Renton.
Later in 1978, he joined Fairey Engineering band on bass trombone, a position he held with distinction until his retirement in 1998.
During his twenty years at Fairey's, Jim won all the major competitions, both here and in Europe.
Jim's interest in conducting started by watching all the biggest names in our movement direct Fairey's, both in concert and on the contest stage: Walter Hargreaves, Geoffrey Brand, roy Newsome, Major Peter Parkes, James Gourlay, Howard Snell, Richard Evans and others; all wonderful musicians and very interesting characters displaying different styles and bringing something unique to Fairey's bandroom.
During his playing career, Jim has guested with all the top championship bands; Black Dyke, Grimethorpe, Brighouse and Rastrick, Foden's, Desford Colliery, Yorkshire Imperial Metals, Leyland, to name but a few!
The highlight of Jim's playing career at Fairey's was in 1993. He was part of the band as they won the elitist treble, which consists of the British Open, the Nationals and the European Championships. At his last concert, Jim was honoured for his outstanding loyalty and long service - his most treasured trophy.
Jim started his conducting career at the young age of sixteen, with Glossop Junior Band. His next move was to his local village band, Hollingworth. He worked with them for 12 months and had a hugely successful time, wining many local 4th Section prizes which included 4th Section Pontin's Championship. The highlight of this year was at Wembley Conference Centre, when Holingworth were crowned National 4th Section champions. Two weeks later, Fairey's won the Nationals at the Albert Hall, London. What a month that was!
Moving back to his musical rots and family ties, he led Glossop Old Band from the Fourth Section to the Championship in 5 years, winning the Third Section National Finals in 1994 and Second Section National Finals in 1995 - thus completng a unique treble.
In the last few years, Jim's conducting skills have been in constant demand. He has guested with Williams Fairy, Wingastes, Leyland, Ransomes, Marple, Point of Ayr and many others.
At the end of 2004, Jim resigned from Glossop Old Band, having reached a point of burn out and probably being there too long. Disillusioned, he planned to take a long break from the movement that he has been heavily involved in since the age of twelve. However, best laid plans....etc, were interrupted by a telephone call from Besses O' th' Barn, asking him to help them through a hectic Christmas period. Jim responded to this request and, was subsequently offered the vacant position of Musical Director for which he held until joining Silk on the 17th May 2006
The band look forward to a long and successful relationship with Jim.
